CVE-2023-4528 exploited unsafe Java deserialisation in JSCAPE’s Manager Service. Attackers could send maliciously crafted XML-encoded Java objects to port 10880, which JSCAPE would deserialise and execute as root (Linux) or SYSTEM (Windows). The vulnerability was trivial to exploit if attackers had network access to the management port — and that port was enabled by default.
The core issue is architectural: Java deserialisation vulnerabilities are a well-known attack class, and JSCAPE’s design allowed untrusted data to reach deserialisation routines with excessive privileges. Rapid7 noted exploitation was straightforward: java.lang.Runtime.getRuntime().exec() with shell commands, giving attackers complete system control.
Diplomat MFT avoids this class of vulnerability through several design decisions: the platform doesn’t expose management services on network ports by default, session management uses encrypted and validated data structures rather than executable formats, and the application runs with minimal required privileges rather than root/SYSTEM. The Edge Gateway architecture (Enterprise Edition) adds another layer — even if the gateway were compromised, attackers gain nothing useful because it stores no credentials, keys, or data and cannot initiate internal connections.
