Wing FTP Server vs Diplomat MFT
Why replace Wing FTP Server with Diplomat MFT?
Wing FTP Server is a file transfer protocol software that provides FTP, SFTP, and HTTP file transfer capabilities across Windows, Linux, and macOS platforms. Because of Wing FTP Server’s cross-platform compatibility and ease of use, it became a popular choice for organizations needing basic file transfer functionality. Unfortunately for Wing FTP Server users, the platform has demonstrated critical security vulnerabilities that put enterprise data at serious risk.
The discovery of CVE-2025-47812—a vulnerability with a perfect 10 out of 10 CVSS severity score that “guarantees total server compromise”—has forced thousands of organizations to reconsider their file transfer security strategy. With CISA confirming active exploitation and mandating emergency patches for federal agencies, many IT leaders are questioning whether Wing FTP Server’s architecture can provide the enterprise-grade security their organizations require.
With features like security-first architecture, granular permissions, enterprise SSO integration, and comprehensive compliance reporting, Diplomat MFT has proven to be the secure alternative that Wing FTP Server users need. Unlike Wing FTP Server’s reactive security approach, Diplomat MFT was built from the ground up with enterprise security as the foundation—eliminating the need for emergency patches and providing the peace of mind that comes with a platform designed for today’s threat landscape.

Understanding the features and benefits of the technologies
Wing FTP Server utilises a server manager to transfer via FTP, FTPS, SFTP, HTTP and HTTPS. This multi-protocol support made it a popular choice for organizations needing flexible file transfer options. It depends on the protocol you are using or need for your organization that will determine the best protocol to use. Generally, SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) is the safest and most secure protocol to use. Diplomat MFT supports all protocols: FTPS, SFTP, FTP but not HTTPS. Not supporting HTTPS is part of the secure-by-design architecture which reduces the potential threats to your sensitive data.
Employs SFTP and OpenPGP encryption for highest security
Calendar exclusions prevent transfers on bank holidays
Reducing risk of human error by automating transfers
Robust scheduler for easy configuration of transfer times
Full audit trails, file archiving, and notifications
Integrates with various protocols (SFTP, FTPS, AS2, HTTPS)
What does “Enterprise” file transfer really mean?
The term “enterprise” implies a product has the features, capacity, and job management capabilities to handle the demands of the largest organizations. With managed file transfer software, that means automating the largest file transfers to an extensive digital supply chain, doing it securely and reliably, and keeping pace no matter how your needs expand. It also means including enterprise-class features such as full auditing, alerting, data archiving and retention, directory management integration, PGP encryption management, and 24×7 support. We’ve helped a lot of organizations that found Cerberus FTP Server Enterprise fell short of those expectations. And so, if you’re looking for an alternative to Cerberus FTP Server and need an MFT solution that has been proven in the most demanding enterprise environments—and is ready for more—take a look at Diplomat MFT. You’ll be glad you did.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why can't we just patch Wing FTP Server and keep using it?
Patching CVE-2025-47812 addresses that specific vulnerability, but the architectural problems that enabled it remain. Wing FTP runs with root/SYSTEM privileges by default, stores session data in executable Lua files without input sanitisation, and uses a monolithic design where the web interface has direct access to core functions. This architecture has already produced three CVEs in 2025 alone.
More practically: Wing FTP is scripting-centric. You’re still managing configurations through code, which creates what we call the “Bob and Cindy problem” — Bob set it up 15 years ago, Cindy’s inherited it, and nobody fully understands how it works or what will break if you change something. Diplomat MFT’s configuration is self-documenting through its interface. Any IT professional can look at a transaction and immediately understand what it does, where files come from and go, and what encryption is applied.
How did CVE-2025-47812 actually compromise systems, and how does Diplomat MFT prevent similar attacks?
Wing FTP exposes its entire application directly to the internet — the same component handling authentication, session management, and file operations faces external traffic. When CVE-2025-47812 was exploited, attackers had immediate root/SYSTEM access because there was no separation.
Diplomat MFT’s Edge Gateway sits in your DMZ and operates like a marionette — external users think they’re connecting to a real server, but it has no autonomy. It only responds to instructions from Diplomat MFT internally. Nothing is stored on the gateway: no keys, no user lists, no credentials. Files never exist unencrypted on it, even in memory.
If attackers compromise the Edge Gateway, they get nothing useful. They can’t pivot to internal systems because the gateway has no internal access — it only responds to instructions, never initiates them. You keep Diplomat MFT protected internally while still accepting external connections.
What's the realistic timeline and disruption for migrating from Wing FTP to Diplomat MFT?
Emergency migrations can complete in 48-72 hours for organizations with straightforward configurations. Standard migrations typically take 1-2 weeks with a parallel running period where both systems operate simultaneously. During parallel operation, you validate that Diplomat MFT replicates your existing workflows exactly before decommissioning Wing FTP. There’s no required downtime—critical transfers continue throughout. The migration includes mapping your existing user accounts, transfer schedules, and folder structures, then progressively moving non-critical processes first, followed by production workloads during a maintenance window.
SFTP only encrypts data in transit. Files are unencrypted at rest on both endpoints. If Wing FTP’s vulnerability — or any endpoint compromise — exposes your server, attackers access files in plain text.
But here’s the operational reality: many organizations have policies requiring annual key rotation, or partners like banks mandate it. If you’re rotating keys once a year, you 100% forget how to do it between cycles. If it’s every two years, the same people aren’t even working there anymore.
Diplomat MFT can pre-generate auto-rotating PGP subkeys — create 90-day rotating keys for 20+ years in a single operation. Your partners receive your public key once and automatically have all future keys. The system seamlessly switches to new keys as old ones expire. No annual fire drill, no forgotten processes, no emergency calls when your key expires at 2 AM on a Friday.
For compliance (HIPAA, PCI DSS, GDPR), auditors want evidence of data-at-rest protection, not just transport encryption. Wing FTP requires external tools and custom scripts. Diplomat includes it natively.
Does Diplomat MFT's automated PGP encryption actually matter if we're already using SFTP?
Standard migrations typically take 1-2 weeks with a parallel running period. During parallel operation, both systems run simultaneously so you can validate that Diplomat MFT replicates your existing workflows before decommissioning Wing FTP. There’s no required downtime.
What often surprises people: the actual migration scope is usually smaller than expected. The City of Los Angeles, currently migrating from GoAnywhere, started by auditing existing automations and asking process owners “are you still using this?” Many processes were scratched off the list entirely because they were no longer needed.
When something fails post-migration, Diplomat doesn’t just send “Job failed” — the notification email includes a summary plus the full debug log in the body. Whether it arrives in your inbox or creates a ServiceNow ticket, you have everything needed to diagnose the problem immediately. You’re not hunting through server logs at 3 AM.
Why is an Edge Gateway architecture critical, and why doesn't Wing FTP have one?
This is a common scenario: you’re downloading from a bank’s SFTP server where you don’t have delete permissions. Traditional scripts handle this badly — either re-transferring the same files repeatedly or building complex logic to track what’s already been processed.
Diplomat MFT uses a high watermark method that’s unique to the platform. Whenever files transfer successfully, it records the newest modified timestamp. Next check, it only looks for files with timestamps newer than that watermark. Resource-light, no external tracking files to maintain, no risk of re-processing.
For files you DO control: Diplomat automatically archives everything it processes — compresses it, renames it with a standardised convention, stores it by process and date. When a partner calls asking you to re-upload that file from three weeks ago, you go to the folder for that process, find the file for that date, extract it, done. And you set retention policies so these archives don’t build up forever. Three days, ninety days, whatever makes sense — Diplomat prunes automatically.

The support is fantastic. I had to contact them on a few occasions – as it turns out, not for issues with Diplomat MFT but issues with one of the FTP partners. Coviant support stuck with me and went above and beyond to troubleshoot and figure out the issue.

Dave L.
Manager of Information & Technology
Diplomat MFT is a solid data transfer product, its easy to set up, and easy to use. I like the way the transaction builder is laid out. It’s so easy to understand what values it wants.

Adah B.

I find the sftp file transfers to be the most helpful tool of Diplomat MFT. No need for programming, the interface is customized already and users only need to fill in the boxes.

Jeff M.
The interface and GUI are very straightforward. The options are simple and labeled so anyone can understand how to set up and configure. The ability to test something without actually sending something is also beneficial.
